88X31 Exploration

Created: Last updated:

I have been having lots of fun learning about 88x31 buttons/badges. These small images have a history on the web - and the name comes from the dimensions used - either 88x31 pixels or 88x15

Although buttons were popularized by early web companies such as Netscape and Microsoft, GeoCities contributed greatly to their growth as a visual element used on websites. As a free web hosting service, GeoCities required users to link back to GeoCities for attribution and advertising purposes. The 88×31 button became one of the popular ways to do this.

The idea of linking back to your own website via a button stuck with people, and custom buttons emerged!

Trends emerged: people link to one another by using the buttons, people collect distinct buttons, etc

I like the visual contribution that these buttons bring, and my interest will be in using them and making my own! I am going to try my best to play by the rules of etiquette outlined in the the buttons page

An example of custom buttons (as gifs) made so far are:
